The Bothell Thunder Baseball Club held their annual tryouts on Monday, June 17th, and the turnout was nothing short of spectacular. A total of 65 boys, ages 9 through 12, showed up to showcase their skills and compete for a spot on one of the Thunder’s teams for the upcoming 2024-2025 season. The tryouts were held at the club’s home field and saw the young athletes participate in a series of rigorous skill and agility exercises.
The Tryout Process
The aspiring Thunder players were put through their paces with a variety of drills designed to test their speed, agility, and baseball skills. Key exercises included:
- Home to First Base Running: Testing speed and acceleration.
- Home to Third Base Running: Assessing endurance and quickness.
- Infield Drills: Evaluating fielding mechanics and reaction times.
- Outfield Drills: Judging catching ability and throwing accuracy.
- Hitting Drills: Measuring batting technique and power.
Each player had the chance to demonstrate their abilities in front of the Thunder’s coaching staff, hoping to earn a spot on one of the teams.
Record-Breaking Turnout
Thunder Director Andy Walker expressed his delight with the turnout, stating, “We had an amazing turnout, probably the best we’ve ever had, and it was highly competitive. Last year, we didn’t have enough kids for a 12u team and our 9u team was short players after tryouts. This year, both of those teams had great numbers.”
Walker’s enthusiasm was palpable as he shared how the increased participation bodes well for the Thunder’s future. The heightened competition means that each team will be made up of players who have truly earned their spot through dedication and skill.
Looking Ahead to the Season
With tryouts concluded, the Bothell Thunder are now setting their sights on the upcoming 2024-2025 season. Fall training is set to begin in September, giving the newly formed teams a chance to gel and prepare for a competitive season.
Walker will take the helm as head coach for the 11u team, bringing his extensive experience and passion for the game to guide the young players. Joining him in the coaching staff are:
- Kyle Wilkins: Head Coach of the 12u team.
- Mike Pierce: Head Coach of the 10u team.
- Cody Lamens: Head Coach of the 9u team.
Each coach brings their unique expertise and coaching style to the Thunder, ensuring that players at every level receive top-notch training and mentorship.
The Bothell Thunder Baseball Club is buzzing with excitement following a highly successful tryout event. With a strong roster of talented young athletes and a dedicated coaching staff, the Thunder are poised for a thrilling and competitive season ahead. Stay tuned for more updates as the teams embark on their journey this fall, aiming to make their mark in the 2024-2025 season. Go Thunder!
